Lot Description
[MANUSCRIPT - GEOMETRY]. "Farragine Matematica E: Extesum et mumeribuius sunt farrago libelli." N.p., ca 18th century.
4to. 200pp. manuscript in Italian, in ink with diagrams and tables, title and page numbers lettered in red, errata slips in the same hand laid in. (Two tears with losses repaired to title-page not affecting text, lacking pp.75-76, presumably blank.) Contemporary quarter sheep uncut (some minor rubbing or soiling.)
The manuscript includes a variety of mathematical problems and solutions, including trigonometry and geometry. Though pp.75-76 are missing, p.77 is blank, and p.78 opens a new section titled "Problema I." The hand is incredibly neat throughout, and the errata tipped in in the same holograph suggest the work is the author's own copy. It is presumably part of a larger work, as a footnote on p.33 refers to "Farragine Matematica A." The Bern Dibner collection at Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries hold a copy of a 74pp. manuscript lettered in red and black ink also entitled "Farragine matematica," further suggesting the present manuscript is part of a larger work.
