Navajo Late Classic Blanket / Rug
fourth quarter 19th century


hand-spun red, yellow, gray, and indigo with accents of a blue plied yarn; woven with a banded design
69-1/2 x 50 inches

Affixed is a tag that reads: "Navajo Woman's Blanket 71" x 51" / (Arizona) Classical Period (1865-95) / Banded style with serrated zig-zag pinetree-like motif / From the estate of Helen Ruhe / Newton, Mass / cf Kahlenberg + Berlant, "The Navajo Blanket" / plate 45" (on verso) "Considering age and evidence of use as a / wearing blanket, the condition is excellent. / Some minor conservation was carried out / in consultation with Gertrude / Markeil, Conservator of Textiles / Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) / Spectrographic analysis by W.J. Young, MFA / of small sample of red (11/17/72) identifies / dye as cochineal with unknown mordant / Bulge around neck and shoulders / old native repair"
