Lot Description
[AVIATION]. A group of early images of airplanes including US Airmail and US Army, comprising:
Albumen photograph on cardstock mount of Charles LINDBERGH (1902-1974) standing in a group near his plane the Spirit of St. Louis. N.p.: n.p., n.d. [ca 1927]. 3 x 2 ¾ in. (faint scratches to surface). -- A group of 9 images depicting the Apollo 11 spaceflight and crew. N.p.: National Aeronautics and Space Administration, n.d. 8 x 10 in. (light soil, toning).
[With:] Images documenting early flight, ca first quarter twentieth century, including images of crashed planes, early aviators, hangars, and more. Handwritten inscriptions on some images identify location as College Park, Maryland. The Post Office Department initiated regular U.S. Air Mail Service from College Park Airfield to New York City on August 12, 1918. Identified images include US Army planes and US Mail planes, the “Pan American Clipper,” as well as “United Air Lines” crew members, and the Los Angeles Airport control tower. Majority of images are first half of twentieth century with sizes spanning 8 x 10 to 3 x 2 in. Conditions vary, some with adhesive residue, light soil, toning.
