Extensive and affectionate ink inscription to the verso: "Kate, I am now about to leave you, and I now warn you not to pay attention to the many oily tales that will be poured into your ears by designing persons, but remain true...And don't, oh don't let your temper mislead you, and when you look upon the other side of this, think of him who advises you thus, and may God protect and assist you until I am with you again never more to part."
[With:] Oval vignetted studio portrait of a woman. St. Joseph, MO: J.W. Batchellei, n.d. 2 1/8 x 3 5/8 in. CDV (spotting, toned). Likely the cowboy's paramour.
