Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. Cabinet photograph of the tomahawk of John Mohawk, stolen and used by Moses Van Campen in 1780. Bath, New York: Goold, 1888.
4 x 5 1/2 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (toning, surface soiling, and light wear to edges and corners of mount). Photographer's imprint on mount recto. Ink inscription on verso records the history of the featured tomahawk: "A photograph of the Tomahawk, with which Moses Van Campen made his mark in the shoulder-blade of John. A Mohawk sachem, after having slain with it, five of John's associated warriors, in a lively scrimmage, above Wyalusing, Pa, when Moses was striking for freedom, one night, in 1780. / Yours Sincerely / A.P. Brush / Bath. 1888."
The oval image features the tomahawk elevated diagonally by a string visible at upper left of image. The tomahawk is currently curated by the Letworth State Park Museum in Castile, New York.
