Lot Description
[POLITICS IN AMERICA] - [GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885)]. Grant/Colfax folk art drum head created for the 1868 campaign.
Grant and Colfax / The Amabien / Union For Ever (twice). Patriotic motif below the candidates’ names, flag with both red and blue stripes between the “Union For Ever” notes. Blue stars (two large, four small) arch above this. In center is “The Amabien,” possibly a reference to one of Grant’s supporting groups. Drum head mounted on rim of the skin and upper rim of a drum. Glazed and wired for wall hanging. (Considerable surface soil and darkening.)
