Lot Description
[LINCOLNIANA]. Patriotic hand-carved woodblock used for printed political campaign broadsides. N.p.: n.d., [ca 1860].
Approximate diameter 11 in. (loss to left, some cracks, surface inked); mounted in plexiglass box (unexamined out of box).
A Federal eagle is depicted with an olive branch in its mouth, the Federal shield with stars, and 3 arrows held in its talons. Above the eagle reads "The Union Must Be Preserv'd."
[With:] CORONATO, Bob, artist. The Union Must Be Preserv'd. Woodblock print, n.d., approx. visible 12 x 12 in., on wove paper, matted and framed in same plexiglass box, not examined out of box. Appears to have been printed from an earlier state of the block or significantly retouched as the section of the shield and wing is complete in the print though some of the block's cracks are present. Coronato graduated from the Otis/Parsons Institute of Fine Art in Los Angeles, and moved to Wyoming to pursue a career as a cowboy artist. His work has been shown at the High Plains Museum.
