Lot Description

An Unusually Large Scrimshaw Tooth Depicting A Seaport
Mid 19th Century

depicting an unidentified port-of-call, featuring a huddle of buildings, one flying an American flag, two distinctive church towers surmounted with crosses, a long, peninsular finger of land bordering the harbor, a full-rigged ship evidently at anchor, and a two-masted schooner underway, with an unadorned figure of Columbia standing over the scene, holding an American flag, the back polished but undecorated.
Length 9 inches.

Hindman is grateful to Stuart Frank, Senior Curator Emeritus of the New Bedford Whaling Museum for his assistance in the cataloging of the scrimshaw offered in this auction.
