Lot Description

A 1964 Sonny Liston vs. Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) Heavyweight Boxing Championship Weigh In Press Ticket,

reads PRESS TICKET LISTON-CLAY, HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP WEIGH-IN, MIAMI BEACH CONVENTION HALL, 1700 Washington Avenue, February 25, 1964 ADMIT ONE, THIS TICKET IS GOOD FOR WEIGH IN CEREMONIES ONLY.

1 3/4 x 5 inches.

This ticket granted access to one of the most bizarre scenes in boxing history. The young brash challenger relentlessly taunted Liston leading up to the fight and Clay's antics reached an apex the morning of the bout. Clay entered the weigh in ceremonies at Convention Hall with his boxing idol, Sugar Ray Robinson declaring "I'm the champ! Tell Sonny I'm here. Bring that big ugly bear on." After fining Clay $2,500 for his behavior, Miami Beach boxing commission officials took Clay's blood pressure measuring 200/100. Dr. Alexander Robbins, the chief physician of the Miami Beach Boxing Commission announced that if Clay's blood pressure didn't lower, the fight would be cancelled. Away from the cameras, Clay had his blood pressure retaken an hour later with it back to normal and would go on to take his first step in cementing his legacy as "The Greatest of All Time."
