Lot Description
CURRIER and IVES, publishers
The Great International University Boat Race On the River Thames (England) from Putney to Mortlake 4 Miles 2 Furlongs August 27th 1869. Between the Picked Crews of Harvard (American) and Oxford (English) Universities, 1869. (G. 2843). Large format lithograph with hand-coloring heightened in gum arabic, on wove paper, 605 x 810 mm sheet. Some minor marginal soiling, a few old marginal dealer or framer pencil marks, some light soiling verso. VERY RARE: According to online records, no example of this print has sold at auction in over 80 years. A Goodspeed description from 1937 notes: "This is an extremely rare print. To most people, it is practically a myth. The print was probably unpopular since Harvard lost the race. This may have caused the stone to have been destroyed before many impressions were issued."
