8vo. Half-title; one folding letterpress table. (Some spotting.) Original blue blind-stamped cloth, spine gilt-lettered (some light wear, minor losses to spine ends, hinges starting). Provenance: Seguin (two signatures, January 27, 1860).
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with two quotations facing title-page. Darwin's work 'marked a turning point, not only in the history of science, but in the history of ideas in general, for there is no field of human intellectual endeavor that has not been influenced by the thought and fact of evolution' (DSB III, p.571).
