約1845年 中國風鋼版畫十張:宮殿與神廟

艾隆是維多利亞時代著名的建築師。在今天,他的插畫遠比建築有名。自18世紀末馬戛爾尼使團訪華,帶回乾隆帝賞賜的大批回禮,“中國風”在大不列顛刮起旋風。艾隆游遍大英與中亞,對華夏心向往之,卻不曾有機會涉足,所以根據前任的筆記游記,創作了許多心目中的滿清社會場景。在這些版畫中,有城鎮市集、深宮寺廟;有江南山水、藏蒙風土;有嬉鬧小兒、有深閨貴婦。可以説市井百態羅列風俗。但是細察之下,難掩歐陸風格——雕梁畫棟俱是洋式,官紳香客高鼻深目,織綉羅衫襯蕾絲花邊。這種臆想帶來的裝飾手法是如此天真,以一種赤誠的可愛,令人莞爾。
