Lot Description

PLATH, Sylvia (1932-1963). The Colossus and other poems. London: Heinemann, 1960.

8vo. Original green cloth gilt; original printed dust jacket (some spotting to rear panel, some toning to edges); green morocco folding case. Provenance: Elizabeth Jennings (1926-2001), English poet (signature on flyleaf).

FIRST EDITION, THE POET ELIZABETH JENNINGS’ COPY with her signature. Jennings, who wrote in a traditional formalist style, was the only woman counted among the postwar Movement poets, including Philip Larkin, Kingsley Amis, John Wain and Thom Gun. Through Ted Hughes’ relationships on the fringe of The Movement, the two 20th century poets were acquainted, and both Plath and Jennings have been labeled as confessional poets due to their self-disclosing manner. A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY.

[With:] PLATH. The Colossus & Other Poems. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1962. Original cloth; original printed dust jacket. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION.
