Lot Description

SHAKESPEARE, William, (1564-1616). Works. [The Vale Shakespeare]. London: Vale Press, 1900-1903. 


39 volumes, 8vo. Numerous wood-engraved decorative borders and illustrations by Charles Ricketts throughout. Contemporary tan straight-grained morocco gilt, spines in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands gilt, red and brown calf lettering-pieces gilt in 2, the rest gilt-decorated, STAMP-SIGNED BY ZAEHNSDORF, 1912 (a few covers detached or detaching, one volume with spine repaired, one volume with small losses to spine ends, some light wear).

LIMITED EDITION, one of 300 copies printed by the Vale Press. The most ambitious publication of Charles Ricketts' Vale Press. Ricketts used different borders for the tragedies, the comedies and the histories.
