Lot Description
CHARDIN, John, Sir (1643-1713). The Travels of Sir John Chardin into Persia and the East Indies, Through the Black Sea, and the Country of Colchis. London: for Christopher Bateman, 1691.
Small folio (306 x 190 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece (dated 1643), engraved title-page (dated 1686), engraved folding map (a few short tears), 16 engraved plates (many folding, some with tears and old repairs); engraved head-pieces and initials, title-page printed in red and black. (Lacking "Directions to Binder" leaf, some soiling or spotting throughout.) Contemporary calf (rebacked preserving original spine).
Later edition in English, first published in English in 1686, and again in 1689; the lats of the 17th-century folio editions. ESTC R18098; Wilson 40.
