Lot Description
US Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword by Collins & Co in Display Case Attributed to 2nd Lt. Lewis W Stevenson 176th New York Infantry
American Civil War
30.875" single edged spear point blade with a 20.5" stopped median fuller. Blade 1.1" wide at ricasso. Overall length 36.25". 5.25" hilt with gilt cast brass guard decorated with foliate themes and shagreen covered grooved wooden grip with 14 wraps of twisted wire. Blade is decorated with frosty etching with flowing foliate, patriotic and martial themes. Clear Collins markings are present on the reverse ricasso. The sword is accompanied by a reproduction brass mounted leather scabbard and a wooden display case with a Plexiglas lid. An engraved plate in the case identifies the sword has having been owned by 2nd Lt. Lewis W Stevenson of Company B, 176th New York Infantry and notes that Stevenson carried the sword at the funeral of President Abraham Lincoln. There are no identifying marks or presentation on the sword to being to place it in the hands of the man listed on the plaque, nor to place it at the even to which it is supposedly tied.
