Lot Description

Group of 7 US Federal Era through Pre-1816 US Socket Bayonets
War of 1812

1) Massachusetts Marked US Model 1795 Socket Bayonet, circa 1808-1812. 14" unfluted blade 2.75" friction fit socket with bridge. 17.125" overall. Socket marked 11, E, 11634 on the obverse and MS on the reverse. Face of blade with a square punch mark. Metal with moderate amounts of oxidation.
2) US Model 1795 Socket Bayonet, circa 1808-1810. 15" unfluted blade, 2.75" friction fit socket without bridge, mortised for a bottom stud. 18.25" overall. Unmarked. Heavily oxidized, socket cracked.
3) US Model 1795 Socket Bayonet circa 1812-1814. 14.5" blade with rudimentary face flute, 3.45" friction fit socket. 18.125" overall. Face of blade deeply stamped US/??, so deeply stamped the letters are almost illegible. Heavily oxidized attic condition, socket cracked.
4) US Model 1795 Socket Bayonet circa 1810-1812. 14.25" blade with rudimentary face flute, 2.75" friction fit socket. Overall length 17.375". Flat shank face marked US. Heavily oxidized metal.
5) US Model 1795 Socket Bayonet, circa 1812-1814, possibly an early M1815 bayonet. 15.25" blade with rudimentary face flute, 3.25" friction fit socket. Overall length 18.375". Blade marked US, socket marked with an X forward of the mortise cut. Chemically cleaned to bright, evenly pitted throughout. Socket with a small crack.
6) US Copy of a French 1754? Socket Bayonet. 14.25" blade with rudimentary face flute, 2.4" friction fit unbridged socket. Overall length 17". Face of blade deeply stamped with an illegible mark at the ricasso. Heavily oxidized and pitted, socket crude with small cracks and somewhat misshapen.
7) US Model 1795 Replacement Socket Bayonet, circa 1814-1816. 16" fluted prow point blade, 3" friction fit socket mortised for a bottom stud. Overall length 19". Blade markings mostly obscured by pitting, but appear to be US over illegible forger's initials. Heavily oxidized and pitted.
