Single shot flintlock muzzleloading musket with no rear sight, a blade front sight, a hole for a sling swivel in the triggerguard bow and a an old iron trumpet head ramrod. 5.5" flat lock remains in original flint with an unbridled faceted iron fenced pan and a flat swan neck cock that may be replaced. Top jaw and screw appear to be replacements. The gun appears to be a somewhat crude and clunky American restock of various parts with the lock from a smaller European long arm, probably a fusil or rifle, and the barrel from a musket. Both parts could be of French origin. The iron furniture is big and blocky and may well be of Germanic or Low Countries origin. The restocking and assembling is certainly old and has a feel and appearance similar of some of composite arms assembled during the period before and during the American Revolution. The lock and barrel are well aligned with good touchhole placement. The exceptionally wide butt, nearly 2" at the widest point, suggests the stocker was influenced by mid-18th century and possibly earlier designs. {ANTIQUE}
