The Democratic Party in 1864 was evenly split between those who wanted to continue the war and those who wished to pursue peace. Ultimately, it was the peace platform that won out despite the objections of the party's nominee, General George B. McClellan, and campaign literature was immediately distributed that cast blame for the ongoing conflict at the feet of Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party. Lincoln would defeat McClellan in the general election by 212-21 electoral votes.
