Lot Description

[LINCOLN-JOHNSON CAMPAIGN]. Lincoln and Johnson and the Whole Ticket. [Bordentown, N.J., 1864].

8 x 2 1/2 in. paper ribbon, printed in red and blue, with a central vignette of an American eagle atop a shield; dated on recto in a contemporary hand. Holograph note written on verso: "...worn by Father on horse back to the union parade in Bordentown Nov 1st 1864... " (Small closed tear to margin not affecting text, pinholes near ends.) Provenance: Charles Satterthwait ("Father", identified by his daughter ("Lizzie") on verso).

A rare Lincoln campaign ribbon worn by a supporter who set out on horseback with 800 others from Bordentown, New Jersey, to Egypt, New York—a journey of nearly 350 miles. Lincoln would be overwhelmingly re-elected seven days later.

This lot is located in Chicago.
