Lot Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. SPENCER, James B. "The President's Message!" Philadelphia, ca 1862.

9 3/4 x 7 in. printed broadside in two columns. (One corner creased, minor soiling, three minor marginal losses not affecting text.)

Throughout Abraham Lincoln's presidency, numerous poetic tributes were written to him, most notably in the early years of the Civil War when it was deemed imperative to keep morale high among Union troops. These tributes only intensified following Lincoln's death as the fallen president was deemed the last and most beloved casualty of the Civil War, with Walt Whitman's "O Captain! My Captain!" and "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd" among the best known.

This lot is located in Chicago.
