Lot Description
[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. Daily Illinois State Journal. Volume X, Number 150. Springfield, Illinois, 8 December 1857.
24 x 16 in. printed newspaper. (Scattered staining throughout.)
A front-page advertisement for "Lincoln & Herndon" features additional text reading, "Attorneys and counsellors at law - will practice in the Courts of Law and Chancery in this State - Springfield, Ill."
Abraham Lincoln and William Herndon first met in 1837 while Herndon was working as a clerk at Joshua Speed's general store in Springfield, where the two often engaged in debates and political discussions. A few years later, Herndon began studying law at the Logan and Lincoln offices and would eventually pass the bar in 1844. That same year, Lincoln decided to begin his own practice with Herndon as his junior partner. The Lincoln & Herndon partnership was the longest lasting of either man's career, ending only when Lincoln departed for Washington in 1861.
