ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE SIXTH NIGHT OF BOOTH'S PERFORMANCE AS CHARLES DE MOOR IN SCHILLER'S THE ROBBERS.

The Robbers was the first dramatic play by German playwright Friedrich Schiller and is considered highly influential in the development of European melodrama. It tells the tale of two aristocratic brothers, Franz and Karl (performed in the United States as Francis and Charles), locked in a battle for their father's inheritance.

In this play, Booth played the role of Charles, the elder, more carefree and rebellious son, who is disinherited from his father's fortune following his younger brother's machinations and becomes a murderous criminal. The Philadelphia Press would devote an entire column to Booth's engagement, much of it gentle criticism of his Richard III: "We welcome him to our stage as a rising man and as the possessor of a name which we cannot regard without interest... It is, perhaps, unfortunate that he has become so soon a star..."
