James Miller was a New York-based publisher whose namesake publishing house operated from 1860 to 1883. He began work as a clerk for C.S. Francis & Co. in the 1850s. Upon Francis's retirement in 1859, Miller bought out his share of the firm and reopened it under his own name.

With a focus on books for children, Miller sought to publish materials that would provide moral lessons to the young. Within a few months of President Lincoln's assassination, he printed the present broadside, with its large print indicating that its intended audience was the same children for whom he printed his books. Among his most popular titles were Grimm's Household Library, Lu-Lu's Books, Parley's Fireside Library, and Youth's History of the Rebellion. Upon his death in 1883, his publishing house closed and was succeeded by Thomas R. Knox & Company.
