Lot Description

[LINCOLN ASSASSINATION]. Illinois State Journal Extra. Springfield, 16 April 1865.

19 1/2 x 12 1/2 in. printed newspaper in four columns describing various public pronouncements of grief following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. (Minor corner loss, restored.)

"THE WHOLE PEOPLE IN MOURNING."

Tributes to Abraham Lincoln began to pour in almost immediately, with state and local governments all across the country passing resolutions to honor the assassinated president. On April 16, the city of Springfield passed a resolution "deem[ing] it proper, and just to the State of Illinois, that the remains of Abraham Lincoln, late President of the United States, now deceased, shall be interred at the Capital of the state, so long his residence..." Although Lincoln's remains did eventually end up in Springfield, Mary Lincoln vehemently argued against his being interred at the State Capitol, feeling that her husband should be laid to rest in a quieter part of the city.

This lot is located in Chicago.
