Lot Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. NEALE, Thomas M. To the voters of Sangamon County. Sangamon Co., IL: N.p., July 7, 1832.

11 1/4 x 8 3/4 in. printed broadside. (Spotting and toning, minor losses at old folds repaired with rice paper.)

EARLY SPRINGFIELD BROADSIDE OF AN APPEAL TO VOTERS BY THE CHIEF SURVEYOR AND FIRST BOSS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

Thomas M. Neale arrived in Springfield in 1824, four years after John Kelly built the first cabin in the area, and became one of the first to practice law in what was then known as Calhoun. Following his return from the Winnebago War of 1827, Neale was appointed justice of the peace and chief surveyor of the land donated to create the city of Springfield, a task for which he appointed a young Abraham Lincoln as his deputy. During this time, Lincoln lived in New Salem, only a short distance away. Neale would hold the position of County Surveyor until his death in 1840.

EXCEEDINGLY RARE: According to online records, this is the only copy extant.
