Lot Description

VALERA, Juan (1824-1905). Pepita Jimenez. Madrid: Calpe, 1925.

4to (285 x 220 mm). Numerous mounted color plates. Original elaborately embossed calf, gilt-lettered on spine. Provenance: Alexander Campbell Hill (armorial bookplate).

Later edition. In his introduction to the English-language translation of his work, published in 1917, Valera writes: " Pepita Jiménez has enjoyed a wide celebrity, not only in Spain, but in every other Spanish-speaking country...My novel, both in essence and form, is distinctively national and classic. Its merits—supposing it to have such—consist in the language and the style, and not in the incidents, which are of the most commonplace, or in the plot, which, if it can be said to have any, is of the simplest."
