FIRST EDITION, issued in book form in 1878 in a pirated edition by the Southern Publishing Company, Brighton. Dickens wrote the story at the request of his friend James T. Fields of Boston, who paid him £1,000 for it. Eckel, p. 200; Gimbel E29.
