A Japanese Gilt Lacquer Carriage-Form Koro with Stand, Meiji Period
Meiji Period

The carriage with removeable top decorated with stylized floral mon, to reveal a chamber for ash and incense below, with screened apertures at top, with a bench support.

Note:
The carriage (cart) may be a reference to the chapter in The Tale of Genji, known as the Battle of the Carriages, where Genji's wife, Aoi's attendants block other carriages and the axle of Lady Rokujo's carriage is broken, leading ultimately to her vengeful spirit possessing Aoi in a future chapter.
