Lot Description
Two Chinese Embellished Snuff Bottles, Attributed to the Tsuda Family Workshop
或為日本津田家裝飾水晶、灰玉鼻煙壺兩件
或為日本津田家裝飾水晶、灰玉鼻煙壺兩件
Comprising a fine rock crystal snuff bottle, embellished with a bird confined within a detailed cage, surrounded by the flowering branches of a prunus tree, and a greyish nephrite jade snuff bottle, with a scene of a meiren admiring a rocky landscape, while the reverse is adorned with an associated poetic inscription.
Note:
These unusual snuff bottles relate to an early group of Chinese snuff bottles embellished in Japan, attributed to either Tsuda Sōkan (1868–1934) or his son, Tsuda Fukuya. The son studied under his father from approximately 1920 until Sōkan's death. Having collaborated closely for over a decade, their artistic styles became virtually indistinguishable, with Fukuya's contribution to the finished works increasing significantly over time.
Height of the Larger One (including stopper): 3 in., 7.7 cm.
Property from the Estate of Eliott Klein, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
