7 1/2 x 5 in. albumen photograph on 11 x 7 in. mount. Marked in the negative, "290." Unmarked but taken by Alexander Gardner, 20 September 1872.
Red Lodge, also known as Pi-pi-sha, was a member of the Yanktonai Dakota delegation to Washington, DC, who visited the Capitol between September 15 and the 20th. Although they negotiated with the government, no treaty was signed. The number, 290 in the neg. is William Henry Jackson's entry number in his 1874 and 1877 Catalogue of photographs in the US Geological Survey.
