Lot Description

Remington US Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle
American Civil War

.54 caliber. 33" barrel. NSN. Browned and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, walnut stock with two flat, spring retained barrel bands. Single shot muzzleloading percussion rifle with fixed rear sight, brass blade front sight, sling swivels and a brass tipped trumpet head steel rammer missing the threads at the end. Remington marked lock dated 1853, no visible date on breech plug tang, barrel proofs weak and not fully visible. No cartouches present. Only 10,000 Remington contract US M1841 Mississippi Rifles were delivered with roughly half being sent to southern states prior to the Civil War. The majority of the northern Remington rifles were altered to accept a bayonet during the Civil War, so unaltered examples are typically considered to be likely Confederate used rifles. {ANTIQUE}
