Lot Description
US Model 1855 Springfield Carbine
American Civil War
.54 caliber. 22" barrel. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, brass nose cap, walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifled carbine with leaf rear sight missing from the dovetail, M1855 rifle pattern front sight blade, sling ring on rear bow of triggerguard, three position tumbler and captive swivel ramrod. Standard Springfield lock markings, dated 1855. No visible markings on barrel, no visible cartouches. The very rare US Model 1855 carbine was the only member of the US M1855 family of arms not to be equipped with the Maynard tape priming system. Only 1,022 of these guns were produced during the calendar year 1855 at Springfield Armory and surviving examples are very scarce. A hard used and well worn, but very rare carbine missing from many advanced Civil War era carbine collections. {ANTIQUE}
