Lot Description

Starr Percussion Carbine
American Civil War

.54 caliber. 21" barrel. SN: 20718. Blued and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, walnut stock and forend secured by a screw and a single solid, spring-retained brass barrel band. Single shot dropping breech percussion breechloading carbine with L-shaped leaf rear sight, front sight blade, and saddle ring opposite lock. Back action lock marked in two lines STARR ARMS CO/YONKERS, N.Y. Barrel marked STARR ARMS CO YONKERS, N.Y. in a single line between the rear sight and the barrel band. Upper tang marked in two lines STARR'S PATENT/SEPT. 14TH, 1856. H.G.S. sub-inspection mark on left of chamber. No cartouche visible in wood. Some 20,601 were produced circa 1862-1865 with the majority seeing Civil War service with Union Cavalry regiments, including the 1st Arkansas, 5th Kansas and 24th New York Cavalry. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this carbine, with the closest numbers found being #20702 and #20722, both of which were issued to Company K of the 16th Missouri Cavalry. {ANTIQUE}
