Lot Description

Rare US Model 1860 Spencer Navy Rifle
American Civil War

.56-56 Spencer. 30" barrel. SN: 465. Blued and color casehardened finish, smooth walnut stock and forend secured by three solid, rounded spring retained bands. Lever action repeating rifle with manually cocked hammer and tubular magazine in butt, equipped with the M1860 folding leaf rear sight, Barleycorn front sight, saber bayonet lug with guide key under the barrel 2.5" from the muzzle, and sling swivels on the middle barrel band and in the toe of the stock. Top of receiver with standard three-line Spencer markings. No visible cartouches at wrist. The correct pattern 1860 magazine follower tube with smooth floor plate is in place. While typically thought of as an infantry or cavalry weapon, the very first Spencer rifles delivered to the US Government during the Civil War were some 800 rifles with saber bayonet lugs that were purchased by the US Navy. These guns are found nominally in the 1 to 800 serial number range and do not have cartouches or inspection marks as found on the later delivery of infantry rifles and cavalry carbines. These low numbered, saber bayonet equipped Spencer rifles are quite rare and do not appear for sale very often. {ANTIQUE}
