Lot Description
New Jersey Surcharged Trenton Contract US Model 1861 Rifle Musket
American Civil War
.58 caliber. 40" round barrel secured by three flat, spring-retained bands. NSN. Bright finish, steel furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with three leaf M1861 pattern rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and a swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle} and U.S./TRENTON forward of the hammer and dated 1864 horizontally at the tail. Top of breech dated 1864 as well. Left angled flat with the usual V/P/{Eagle Head} proof marks with the left barrel flat and counterpane showing NJ surcharges for New Jersey. The number 63 is stamped in the wood behind the breech plug tang and three number "8" marks are stamped in the top of the comb, forward of the buttplate tang. Includes an original tompion in the muzzle. {ANTIQUE}
