Lot Description
Composite "Richmond" Short Rifle
American Civil War
.60 caliber smoothbore. 33.25" barrel. NSN. Bright finish, iron and brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading "rifle" that has been bored smooth and is a composite assembly of parts, with the time period of the assembly being unclear. Barrel is a shortened and smoothbored US Special Model 1861 rifle musket barrel with an eagle on the bolster. The lock is an 1863 dated Richmond marked lock that has an incorrect 1863/64 pattern US hammer on it and mostly reproduction parts on the inside. The barrel has an M1861 rear sight and a reproduction Barleycorn US rifle musket front sight. The two piece brass triggerguard may be from something like a Zouave rifle and the poorly fit brass buttplate is stamped "4" twice on the tang. Both sling swivels and the ramrod are aged reproduction parts. The lower barrel band is ill fitting and in near relic condition and the upper band appears to be a low quality aged reproduction. The top of the stock comb is deeply stamped 14TH ALA. An interesting gun with a well worn and interesting appearance whose beauty is in the eye of the beholder. {ANTIQUE}
