Lot Description

Composite Richmond Rifle
American Civil War

.59 caliber. 32" barrel secured by two flat, spring retained bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock with iron patchbox. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle with M1858 pattern rear sight, M1855 pattern rifle front sight, saber bayonet lug on right of barrel, sling swivel on upper band and on triggerguard. High hump Richmond lock marked C.S./RICHMOND forward of the hammer and dated 1862 at tail. No visible markings on breech of barrel due to pitting and wear. Barrel shortened slightly from the nominal 33" length. The weak outline of a cartouche is present on the counterpane. Rifle appears to be a well worn US Model 1855 Rifle with a Richmond lock in it. Includes a thick, straight shank tulip head ramrod that is short of full length. Upper swivel replaced, includes a reproduction CS style linen sling and has an iron wiper in the patchbox. {ANTIQUE}
