Lot Description

N Beyer Signed Late Golden Age Full Stock Flintlock Rifle

.58 caliber. 43" pinned octagonal barrel. NSN. Browned finish, brass furniture, faux striped hardwood stock with raised cheek rest. Single shot muzzleloading flintlock rifle with fixed notch rear sight, dovetailed front sight blade, finger extension triggerguard tang and lovely 4-piece bird's head patchbox. Lock is likely an old replacement that is marked JOSEPH GOLCHER and is an apparent reconversion to flint. Barrel signed with Nicholas Beyer's typical deep, bold script N Beyer mark, exactly as would be expected on a rifle that features one of his signature bird's head patchboxes. The rifle features some nicely executed flowing incised line carving around the wrist, cheek rest and along the forend. Butt measures 1.6" wide at the widest point. Nicholas Beyer (1780-1850) worked in Lebanon, PA (Lebanon County) and is credited as being one of the great rifle makers of the latter part of the Golden Age of flintlock long rifles. Includes a more recent wooden ramrod. {ANTIQUE}
