Lot Description

Reconverted Deringer Contract US Model 1814 Rifle with Benton Rear Sight
Seminole Wars

.54 caliber. 33" octagon to round barrel secured by three flat, stud retained bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock with cheek rest and oval iron patchbox. Single shot muzzleloading rifle reconverted to flint and modified with the addition of what appears to be an original Harper's Ferry "Benton" or "Screw" adjustable ladder rear sight as used on the "Snell" conversion of Harpers Ferry M1841 Mississippi Rifles. Rifle is equipped with Wickham's improvement spring studs, rather than traditional barrel band springs, as is correct. Front band may be replaced, front sight is a crude replacement, middle band replaced and the ramrod appears to be a cut down 1817 pattern rod. Rifle retains both sling swivels and has a stud for a socket bayonet on the top of the barrel. An original wiper is in the patchbox, along with two flints and some patches. Lock with standard Deringer markings, barrel with typical proofs. An interesting alteration of a US M1814 rifle that was likely upgraded with the new rear sight and bayonet lug by the Confederacy during the Civil War, and likely was percussion at that time, having been returned to flint in the modern era. {ANTIQUE}
