Lot Description

US Model 1828 (1816 Type III) Flintlock Musket by Springfield
Mexican American War

.69 caliber. 42" barrel. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, barrel retained by three flat, spring retained bands, full-length walnut musket stock. Single shot smoothbore muzzleloading flintlock musket with no rear sight, brass blade front sight, socket bayonet lug on top of barrel, sling swivels and a reproduction button head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle}/US forward of the cock and in three vertical lines SPRING/FIELD/1830. Lock remains in original flint. Breech plug tang dated 1830 as well and breech with usual V/P/{Eagle Head} proof marks. Counterpane with the weak script ET cartouche of Elisha Toby and a weak "3rd Class" rating cartouche. Breech also marked with the US Arsenal alphanumeric serial number system that was also used to mate bayonets, in this case S/e 43. {ANTIQUE}
