Lot Description

[Art] Eakins, Thomas. Autograph Letter, signed and initialed

"The standing figure is probably the best figure work I ever did..."

(Philadelphia), 1330 Chestnut (Street), Oct(ober). 29, (18)85. Two-page autograph letter on bifolium, signed by Thomas Eakins to Frank (possibly Frank Waller), sending him works for an exhibition: "Dear Frank, I gathered together what I could, to send you for your exhibition. I did not get the head done that I started for you. The paint got sticky and wouldn't dry for me, but I send it all the same hoping that some may be interested at least in my efforts at construction. Yours truly Thomas Eakins". With a postscript, initialed by Eakins below, "I do not think I shall be able to get on myself though it would give me great pleasure to meet my colleagues, but there will I am sure be other occasions where I shall see them all. I sent you two panel sketches too. The standing figure is probably the best figure work I ever did, but it is pretty well battered. The other sketch is perhaps more interesting, but pleases me much less as work. For the many proofs of your great kindness to me, I am in gratitude Yours truly T.E." Creasing from old folds; short closed tear along top edge.

Writing from his 1330 Chestnut Street studio in Philadelphia, Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) sends several works for an upcoming exhibition. The recipient, Frank, is possibly Frank Waller (1842-1923) an American architect and landscape painter who helped found the Art Student League of New York, among whose members included Eakins.

This lot is located in Philadelphia.
