A fine and scarce group of 36 stereoviews by William Henry Jackson, taken for Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden's 1873 geological survey of Colorado.

Following Jackson's extensive series of views for the Union Pacific Railroad, he was recruited by Ferdinand Hayden for the U.S. Geological Survey team. With the Survey, Jackson explored and photographed vast areas of the West, including Yellowstone and parts of Montana, Utah, Nevada, and as seen here, Colorado. Beginning in 1873, Hayden and crew began to methodically survey the vast Colorado terrain. The team was divided into six groups, three for the northern, middle, and southern regions, and three others covering the entire territory. This included a group led by Jackson, and that included an artist and several naturalists, tasked with photographing, sketching, and gathering observations for the benefit of both scientists and the public. The scientists focused primarily on geology and topography, but also collected plant, animal, and fossil specimens.
