Lot Description
[Presidential] Johnson, Lyndon B. A President's Country A Guide to the Hill Country of Texas
Austin: The Alcalde Press, (1964). First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to McGeorge and Mary Bundy on title-page: "To Mary and Mack Bundy--/ With appreciation / Lyndon B. Johnson". 8vo. Illustrated with photographic reproductions. Original full red calf, stamped in gilt, rubbing to upper and lower spine, front and rear boards soiled; all edges trimmed; pictorial endpapers.
One of a very small number of specially bound copies in a full leather binding that were presented as Christmas gifts by President Johnson to his colleagues and close friends for Christmas 1964.
This copy inscribed to McGeorge Bundy (1919-96), United States National Security Advisor to both President Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, and who was one of the main architects of their foreign policy agendas. Born in Boston and educated at Yale, Bundy served in World War II as an intelligence officer, and afterwards taught United States foreign policy at Harvard. He entered public life in 1961 when he was appointed special assistant for national security affairs by President Kennedy. He became a trusted advisor to the President, and was involved in all of Kennedy's major foreign policy decisions, including the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and crucially, the escalating war in Vietnam, in which he advocated for increased American intervention. Following Kennedy's assassination, he was retained in his post by President Lyndon B. Johnson, where he continued to promote increased American intervention and bombing in Vietnam. He officially resigned from Johnson's administration in 1966, and went on to serve as president of the Ford Foundation until 1979, and then as professor of history at New York University until his death in 1996.
According to RBH, this is only the second copy in this rare presentation binding to come to auction in the past 40 years.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
