Lot Description

New-York: Printed for, and Sold by John Low, 1798-1800. In five volumes, including atlas volume. 8vo. xlviii, (3)-518, (11); 578, (13); 64, 51-710, (8); (ii), 525, (1), 36, (4), 17, (11) pp. (some erratic pagination); signature K2 in Vol. IV misprinted with printed text for pp. 449-456 (the latter text additionally present on signature L2), and lacking the text that should appear on pp. 441-448 (an apparent printer's error). Illustrated with 60 (of 62) engraved plates, including 42 folding maps (lacking maps of Turkey and the Northwest Territory, according to Wheat & Brun the latter not found in any copies they examined), by William Rollinson, Alexander Anderson, Benjamin Tanner, Amos Doolittle, John Scoles, William Barker, Cornelius Tiebout and Thomas Clarke. Full contemporary tree calf, red morocco spine labels, stamped in gilt, spines dry and chipped, many labels now separated or perished, extremities and boards rubbed and worn, some upper and lower joints split; all edges trimmed; ownership signature on front free endpaper of first volume, dated 1824; light to moderate foxing throughout set; scattered offsetting throughout; some plate edges worn; closed tear in bottom edge Mm2 in Vol. IV; other scattered wear; some short tears in folds of plates in atlas volume. Evans and ESTC state that the first volume was printed in 1798, the second and third in 1800, and the fourth in 1799. Our second volume has a date of 1799.
A scarce set of John Payne's Universal Geography, with the fourth volume dedicated entirely to America, and featuring 21 maps of the states, as well as a supplement on the Genesee Country, New York, with a view of Fort Oswego.
