Lot Description
[Daguerre] Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre (1787-1851)
Jean-Pierre Dantan (1800-1869), French.
AUCTIONEER'S NOTE: The Auction Committee is indebted to Society member Jason Wright for calling our attention to the correct identification of this lot, originally cataloged as Daguerre's business card. The present lot is a woodcut trimmed from a page in Danton's "Musee Dantan. Galerie des Charges et Croquis des Celebrities de L'epoque, avec texte explicatif et biographique' (Paris, H. Delloye 1839)" which illustrates 100 celebrities based on Dantan's sculptures. It is not, unfortunately, Daguerre's business card.
After the plaster sculpture created in 1833 by Danton, generally acknowledged as France's first caricaturist. Daguerre's distinctive visage sits atop a building which in turn sits on a camera obscura inscribed with a rebus puzzle spelling "Diorama."
Unevenly trimmed, framed, 3.9 x 2.6", inscribed on verso in pencil "Daguerre's Calling Card! Arnold H. Crane Collection, Chicago, gift of Andrew Jammes, 1969." Further stamped "Thymolized 5/6/73."
Acquired by the present owner from Arnold Crane in 2011.
