A Brussels Biblical Tapestry from The Triumph of the Eucharist Series
By Frans van der Hecke (I), after the design by Peter Paul Rubens, Circa 1660
woven in wool and silk, depicting 'The Eucharist Vanquishing the Heathen Sacrifices', from 'The Triumph of the Eucharist' series, with the classical sacrifice in the temple of Jupiter Capitolinus being interrupted by an angel carrying a chalice with the radiant host, the scene within an architectural setting, flanked by Solomonic columns and draped to the top with fruiting garlands held by putti, the blue outer selvedge with Brussels town mark and weavers initials ‘F.V.H.’
