A Brussels Pastoral Tapestry
Second Quarter 17th Century
woven in wool and silk, depicting a wooded landscape, dominated in the right hand foreground by a an old tree, two small figures in the left background, a castle hidden in the trees beyond, within elaborate architectural borders, flanked to both sides with winged putti suspending fruiting garlands from pilasters and standing on relief-carved column plinths, the top border centered by a grisaille panel in a scrolled surround, the lower window-ledge border with the Brussels town mark, the right hand blue outer slip with an unidentified weaver's cypher ‘S.D.A.E.(?)’
