Lot Description

[WORLD WAR II]. Archive of Sgt. Hobart Pitts 41st Armored Infantry Regt. 2nd Armored Division, KIA.

Grouping related to the combat death of Sgt. Hobart E. Pitts, comprising: Purple Heart in original presentation case, inscribed on verso "For Military Merit / Hobart E. Pitts"; various insignia, including a "Veteran of World War II" medal inscribed on verso "Presented By the Citizens of Rome, N.Y. July 27, 1946"; three insignia with the three-chevron rank of sergeant; two "Hell On Wheels" patches; two 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team shoulder sleeve insignia; "The Armored School" patch; and documents associated with Pitts's service, including his draft registration certificate, a carbon copy of a letter to Mrs. Kathleen Pitts from the Personal Affairs Office following her husband's death, 4 telegrams related to the transport of Pitts's remains home to New York, a life insurance application, a letter from the American Legion Post of Rome, New York, accompanied by the corresponding "American Legion Gold Star Citation"; 3 photographs of Pitts while in the service; and newspaper clippings related to Pitts's death and service.

Hobart Edwin Pitts (1908-1945) of Rome, New York, served as a combat infantryman with the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armored Division. Records indicate he mustered in 21 March 1944, two months after marrying Kathleen O'Neill. He was killed on 2 March 1945 during the closing days of the war as his regiment advanced into Germany on the Rhine. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and is buried at Saint Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Rome, New York.
