[CIVIL WAR]. Hewett brothers of Maine Civil War archive incl. CDVs and correspondence.
CDV vignetted half portrait of 1st Lieutenant Obadiah B. Hewitt, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry, wearing his uniform including slouch hat with crossed saber device and regimental insignia "2," and shoulder straps indicating the rank of 1st lieutenant. Signed in ink on image, "Yours Truly, O. B. Hewett." -- CDV Seated portrait of Captain Marcus L. Hewett, 21st Maine Infantry, wearing his uniform with shoulder straps indicating rank of captain. New York: Kertson & Barker. Identified in ink on mount recto, "Capt Hewett" and inscribed on verso "To Mrs. James H H Hewett" (possibly in Marcus Hewett's hand). -- CDV vignetted bust portrait of Major James H. H. Hewett, 8th Maine Infantry, wearing uniform with shoulder straps indicating rank of 1st lieutenant. Bath, ME: Geo. W. Butler. (2) Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States memorial programs for James Henry Hobbs Hewett. -- A letter from a Unitarian pastor addressed to Reverend William Eliot of St. Louis. Thomaston, ME, 16 June 1859. Accompanied by addressed cover. One page, introducing James Henry Hobbs Hewett and recommending him as a "young man of good moral character" and "an excellent teacher and disciplinarian." -- An 8pp letter from "S. C. Hewett" (possibly James H. H. Hewett's cousin, Simon Crane Hewett), addressed to "James," and dated 1884. Detailing the genealogy of the William Hewett and Payson families, referencing the Crane and Tolman branches and suggesting details of family members' whereabouts during the Revolutionary War era. With typewritten transcription. -- Typewritten "Hewitt genealogy as far as I (Sarah Hewett Thomas) know of it." Comprising 2 pages on tissue paper. -- A warranty deed of property from Martha J. Shibles to James Henry Hobbs Hewett, paid for in the amount of 25 dollars. Undated. -- Together, 6 documents related to James Henry Hobbs Hewett.
3 war-date letters dated 26 February 1865, addressed to "Father," from children Emma, Hattie, and Eloise. It is unclear who the father of these children is, though it is likely that he is some relation to James Henry Hobbs Hewett. -- Letter addressed to "My Dear John" from "Mother." Red Beach[?], 17 July 1870. The identity of the recipient is unclear, though likely some relation of James Henry Hobbs Hewett. -- Letter addressed to "James" (likely James A. Creighton, father of John M. Creighton Sr., who married a daughter of James Henry Hobbs Hewett) from wife, Emily. Thomaston, [ME], 13 March 1859. One page, describing the goings-on at home, including a report that "Capt Kearney's youngest child was buried yesterday, it had the whooping cough." -- Another letter to the same recipient as previous from the same writer as previous (likely to James A. Creighton, from wife Emily). Thomaston, [ME], 28 February 1865. -- And some newspaper clippings and additional photographs.
